Use these to lower the temperature without surrendering your spine.
Bridge starters (connection without flinching)
- “I might be wrong — here’s what I’m using to check it.”
- “I’m trying to separate the problem from the villain story.”
- “We can disagree on policies and still agree on dignity and due process.”
- “I don’t think most people are evil. I think a lot of people are scared.”
- “If you see something I missed, I’ll take a look — respectfully.”
Clarifying questions (good-faith tests)
- “What outcome are you hoping for?”
- “What would change your mind here?”
- “What part do you think is confirmed vs still unclear?”
- “If we had to pick one next step, what would it be?”
Bridge + boundary (connection and an exit)
Use these when the thread turns into heat, insults, or infinite debate.
- “I’m not going to trade insults. If you want to talk facts and outcomes, I’m in.”
- “This claim is serious. I’m not repeating it unless we can source it.”
- “I’m going to step away from this thread. Happy to continue 1:1 if it’s in good faith.”
- “I care more about the relationship than the comment section.”
- “We’re not going to solve this here. I’m going to log the question and move on.”
A simple comment policy (optional to paste sometimes)
- “I’ll answer honest questions. I’m not going to debate in circles or tolerate insults.”
